Vegan Riad Breakfast in Marrakech: What to Expect and How to Get a Real One

Breakfast is the meal travellers get wrong in Marrakech. Dinner is easy — the city is full of restaurants that will cook you vegetables. But breakfast happens inside your riad, before you have found your feet, and the standard riad breakfast is built almost entirely on eggs, cheese, butter and honey. This guide explains what a vegan riad breakfast in Marrakech actually looks like, how to ask for one that is more than fruit and dry bread, and what the traditional Moroccan plant-based breakfast contains.

What a standard riad breakfast contains

Almost every riad in Marrakech serves a version of the same tray: khobz bread, msemen or harcha, croissants or pain au chocolat, jam and honey, laughing-cow style cheese, an omelette or boiled eggs, orange juice, coffee and mint tea. For a vegan guest, the usable part of that tray is bread, jam, juice and tea.

The hidden parts matter too. Msemen and harcha are usually made with butter, so they are not a safe default; croissants and viennoiserie contain butter and sometimes milk; honey appears on pancakes without being announced; and amlou, the almond-argan spread, is often sweetened with honey. Plain khobz bread, olives, olive oil, jam and fruit are the reliably plant-based items.

How to ask your riad for a vegan breakfast

  • Tell them before you arrive, in the booking message, and again the evening before your first morning. Shopping happens early.
  • Name the ingredients, not the label. “No meat, no butter, no eggs, no cheese, no honey, no milk” is understood everywhere; “vegan” is often read as “vegetarian”.
  • Ask for olive oil, olives, avocado, tomato and fruit to be added — otherwise a well-meaning kitchen simply removes things and you get less food, not different food.
  • Ask if msemen can be made with olive oil. Many cooks will do it; it is the same dough.
  • Ask for date or agave syrup instead of honey, and check whether the amlou is honey-sweetened.
  • In Moroccan Arabic: “bla lham, bla zebda, bla ‘assal, bla jben, bla bid” — without meat, butter, honey, cheese, eggs.
Riad kitchens are small and cook what they bought that morning. Asking the night before is the difference between a full plant-based breakfast and a plate of bread and jam.

The traditional Moroccan vegan breakfast

When you strip away the hotel-style additions, the Moroccan breakfast is one of the most plant-based in the Mediterranean:

Dish What it is Vegan as standard?
Khobz Round semolina-and-flour bread baked in the neighbourhood oven Yes
Msemen Folded, layered flatbread, pan-fried Only when made with olive oil instead of butter
Baghrir Thousand-hole semolina pancake Yes, but usually served with butter and honey
Amlou Roasted almond, argan oil and syrup spread Yes when made with date or agave syrup, not honey
Bissara Warm split-pea or broad-bean soup with olive oil and cumin Yes, unless topped with butter
Olives and olive oil Local olives, often with preserved lemon Yes
Seasonal fruit Orange, melon, pomegranate, dates, figs Yes
Mint tea and orange juice Fresh mint, green tea, sugar; hand-pressed juice Yes

That is a complete, generous breakfast without a single substitute product — no plant milk, no mock cheese, nothing imported.

Medina addresses and how delivery actually works

Riads inside the Medina rarely have an address a driver can use. What works is the riad name, the nearest derb or landmark, and a phone number that reception answers. Our courier drives to the closest point a vehicle can reach and walks the final alleys — the same way everything else in the Medina is delivered.

A few practical details: tell reception that a breakfast delivery is expected so nobody is turned away at the door; if you want to eat on the roof terrace, say so and we pack accordingly; and if your riad has a no-outside-food policy (some do), ask before you order — most are relaxed about breakfast, especially when they cannot cater for you themselves.

Breakfast on excursion days

Day trips to the Atlas Mountains, the Agafay desert, Ouzoud or Essaouira leave early, and the roadside stops on the way sell very little that is plant-based. Order the 08:30 slot the night before and ask for the breakfast packed to travel: bread, msemen, amlou, olives, nuts and fruit all survive a few hours in a bag much better than a hotel omelette you cannot eat anyway.

Frequently asked questions

Do riads in Marrakech serve vegan breakfast?

Most riads serve bread, pastries, eggs, cheese, butter, honey and juice. Nearly all will happily leave off the animal products if you tell them the evening before, which leaves bread, olive oil, jam, fruit and mint tea — perfectly good, but the same plate every morning. A few riads now cook a proper plant-based breakfast on request, and a growing number let guests order a vegan breakfast delivered to the terrace.

What is a traditional Moroccan vegan breakfast?

Msemen and baghrir made with olive oil instead of butter, khobz bread, amlou (almond and argan spread) sweetened with date or agave syrup, bissara soup in winter, olives, seasonal fruit, fresh orange juice and mint tea. It is one of the most naturally plant-based breakfasts in the Mediterranean.

Can you deliver vegan breakfast to a riad inside the Medina?

Yes. Cars cannot reach most riads in the Medina, so our courier finishes the last alleys on foot. We deliver anywhere in Marrakech in 30-minute slots between 08:30 and 16:00 for a 25 MAD delivery fee, and we only need the riad name and a phone number the reception can answer.

How far ahead should I order breakfast for my riad?

Order the day before, ideally by the evening, because everything is cooked fresh in the morning. For groups, early slots and public holidays, give us as much notice as you can.

How much does a vegan riad breakfast cost?

Our packs start at 130 MAD for one person, 260 MAD for two, 370 MAD for a family pack and 435 MAD for the premium pack, plus 25 MAD delivery. Payment is cash on delivery in dirhams.
